Religion and Politics

January 10

Comment on a Newsweek Article

Comment: First, how do you eliminate religion from this or any other election? Does going to church every Sunday make you a better person? Maybe, maybe not. But, isn't secularism just as bad? I will not use either as a lithmus test when placing my vote. You are absolutely wrong about the fair tax. It will only tax consumption on he sale of goods. You will receive a check for the entire amount of your earnings, without the ridiculous deductions. Eliminating the evil IRS would in itself be worth a vote for the fair tax. Who takes advantage of the current travesty we call a tax code? Whoever can afford the best accountant- that's who. Go ahead and vote for any of the 3 Democratic acolytes if you really want to feel the pain of unfair taxation. They will immediately roll back whatever benefits you have gained in the last few years. Furthermore, they'll tax all of those evil companies who provide jobs for us.Two more things to consider:
1. "Internationally humiliated?" Every other viable nation on earth worries about their own good first. You have been watching too much mainstream " blame us first " network news. We are the most charitable nation on the planet. If you feel guilty, look in the mirror first.
2. The single and only difference I have seen between a religious myrmidon and a leftist liberal is abortion. If you remove that from the mix, both of these helpless subsets are nearly identical in their guilty, self-righteous and falsely idealistic notions.

Our only hope is to reduce the size of government (and therby it's insatiable appetite for our money) and return control to the states. Are any of the current candidates suited to accomplish this? Certainly none of the democrats- and just as likely- none of the republicans

A great story by Chris Jones

January 27

I love this article!

I found this on MSN. It's an article from Esquire magazine and very well sums up the modern society conundrum.

In Defense of the Fistfight

Why one lippy hippie named Jericho made one writer resolve to start punching jerks again.

By Chris Jones
This whole thing startedor maybe it endedwith these guys engaging in some ritualistic, Hare Krishna clapping crap. They were sitting at a table across the bar from my buddy Phil and me. We were trying to enjoy a quiet pint in our quiet local on a quiet evening, but these hippies wouldn't quit with their clapping. Swear to God, they might as well have been crashing cymbals in my ears.

I asked them politely to stop. "Make us," they said, and then they clapped louder, smiling their dirty-toothed smiles at us, twisting our nipples. One of them was named Jericho, I picked up. He was a skinny bearded guy who looked as though he'd wear Guatemalan mittens in winter. "Jerry," I said when they finally took a break, "come on over here, have a chat." He did, and shortly thereafter, he loosed a throat pony into my face. It was Jerry's bad luck that I had resolved to start punching people again.

It wasn't a snap decision. I'd reached the end of the road after what seemed like a perpetual assault from life's Jerichosthe sorts of a**holes who not only act like a**holes but celebrate their a**holedom: the grease spot who gave me the forearm shiver in our recreational soccer league and said, "It's a man's game, bi***"; the walnut-headed midlife crisis in his convertible who cut me off and then gave me the finger. It felt like they had me surrounded, clapping in concentric circles. I mean, Jesus, a skinny bearded hippie named after a biblical city had just spit in my face.

How'd we get here? Blogs are part of it, along with the incessant frothing of TV pundits and reality-show contestants, especially that lippy midget from The Amazing Race: Everybody thinks they're above being edited. And the saddest part is, the Jerichos are right to feel bulletproof. Somewhere along the way, we've evolved into a culture without consequence, taught so much hokum about the bigger man walking away. Yet to appease us, we've also been told that what goes around comes around. What kind of contradictory horsesh** is thatthat one day, accounts will be settled, but by the universe? I like karma as much as the next guy, but lately, watching my city behave more and more like an Internet comments thread in the midst of a flame war, I've grown tired of waiting for the planets to balance the ledger. It's like we've started playing hockey without the enforcers, and all the scrubs are tripping up the skaters with impunity. You know why Wayne Gretzky could be Wayne Gretzky? Because everybody knew that Dave "Cementhead" Semenko would fill you in if you fu**ed with his friend.

Too bad life changes when we take off our skatesconstrained by fear of cops, by fear of lawyers, by fear of the wife, all of our judges. Not anymore. I would submit, Your Honor, that if someone is doing something demonstrably asinine, and I ask them to stop it, please, and they say, "Make us," they've entered a binding oral contract whereby I am permitted, even obligated, to try to make them.

And so, before I wiped his spit off my face, I grabbed Jericho by his beard and dragged him outside. By the time I had him squared up, I saw all that I needed to see to know that I'd found a new habit: the regret on his once-smiling face. I was surprised by how good it felt, and I stopped for a second, frozen under the streetlights, satisfied that Jericho was about to make like the walls of that bi*** city, and that I was about to settle my own accounts.

Hypocrites!

May 01

Hypocrites!

Can you believe this garbage! I just finished watching one of my favorite demagogues, the Dis-Hon. Rep. Chuck "The Schmuck" Schumer, issuing another blistering polemic on the horrible state of the economy. Yes, we all know the economy stinks right now- but why? Is this the exclusive fault of President Bush? Does he have sole responsibility for the government and its function? I THINK NOT! Granted, he is a moron and the worst republican president I can remember, but what about the cadre of theives we commonly refer to as Congress? What do they do all day besides looking for a sound bite on the news? Do they vote on anything other than feather-bedding earmarks and social-engineering of the ignorant populace? I am personally disinterested in the politically motivated rantings of "Somebody's Grandama" from California, "The Beast from the Northeast", or even the Gangster from Nevada. Does anyone ever demand results from Congress? Are they ever grilled by some journalist angling for a Pulitzer? I THINK NOT! Congress is content to bleed us dry and remain entrenched in their fortresses of insignificance. As long as they bring home the pork, they'll continue to be revered by their lemmings. Their 20 % approval ratings matter not. "Times are terrible!", they lament. " We must change the way Washington works, now!", they unabashadely proclaim from their podium in front of the camera. But don't lose hope fellow Americans. The week after their candidate is elected, the situation will be "much improved", and " not so bad!". They will be content to wile away the next 4 years blaming the previous governance for their continued failings. All the while spending your money like drunken sailors and posturing for the next election cycle. Grounghog Day in congress is every day. Join me in clutching your shrinking wallet and holding these career politicians to their word. They have unequivocally earned their share of the blame for the mess that we call the federal government.

Is McCain the Only Choice?

June 15

In reply to a comment on Vox defending John McCain

My friend Syrin contends that John McCain is the only option this year because he would surround himself with fiscally sound cabinet members. She asks what choice do we have? That my be true-BUT...

Syrin, The choice is to throw all the bums out! Conventional wisdom, which I subscribed to previously, suggests that we once again vote for the candidate who will do the least harm. McCain is responsible for McCain-Feingold (which blatantly violated the first amendment) as well as his incredible ignorance of illegal immigration (this may simply have been pandering to the home state voters). He has been part of the problem for a very long time and his version of reaching across the aisle is surrendering to the loathsome liberals. His seeming reluctance to appeal to the republican base (whoever that is) places him in a very percarious position. I agree that he would be infinitely better fiscally than Obama, but, what does that mean to the victims (excuse me that should be taxpayers and citizens) of the bloated federal government? I have not heard him speak of decreasing the size of the beast, which is ultimately what needs to be done. What good does it do to waste money on social programs versus wasting the same amount on the "Patriot Act"? The pain we will feel after this election presents a rare opportunity to establish the viable third or even fourth political party this country so desperately needs.

Christians Voting for Obama

June 23

Christians voting for Obama

The following phillipic is in response to a question on MyLot entitled " How can a Christian vote for Obama?":

No big surprise here for me.About 10 years ago, when I noticed politics beginning to seep into church services I was confused. Initially, I though this was a fair response to the onslaught of secular propaganda seeping from every pore of society. To some degree I still believe this-BUT- this confusing, and oftentimes contradictory message sent myself (and many others) out the door (Catholic church). I was accustomed to a strictly faith-based service which taught values and morals as a means to enhance humanity and cope with the trials and tribulations of life. The exodus caused by the politicization of religion left the church to deal with a different type of parishoner (not all, simply a majority)who was less inclined to question the political opinions of the church heirarchy. This dichotomy has created a "guilty" congregation who are drawn to the Democrats with their "tomb to womb" mentality and more socialist style of government (many of these new church members are recent immigrants of lower social status and income). The "Christian Right",who's lithmus test was anti-abortion,is a much smaller group in this "new religion" which is fundamentally different than traditional religion. When I look at these people, I see little difference from the far-leftists who were anathema to my traditional religous training. This opinion raises the ire of my regular church-going friends who do not agree with my assessment. They have not been able, however,to explain or contradict the apparent juxtaposition of the traditional far-right and the modern church's dogmatic politics. That said,I believe in God and the Golden Rule and believe that organized religion serves many valuable purposes in the modern world. Many people who I respect very much continue to attend church regularly and tacitly forgive me my opinion!

Major Party Candidates

June 24

Why vote for a major party candidate?

This is in response to a question on MyLot asking which major party candidate to vote for. This question always raises my dander!

Why do we only have two choices? With the exception of a couple of acolytes who live and breathe the party line, most of the respondents to many discussions on MyLot have reservations about both "major party" candidates. The lines are getting blurrier every election cycle.Washington DC is about politicians and their longetivity at the pinnacle of power. They all have impressive resumes and hail from Ivy League schools, thus, their superior and condescending attitudes as to what is right for the common man. This common man is tired of being duped and led around by the nose by slick used car salesmen who think I'll learn the error of my ways by paying $4 for a gallon of gas, to go to work, to pay taxes ,to finance their "vision".Let's all try something new.Let's vote against ALL of the incumbents and support a third party candidate for the presidency.OR-continue to support a socialist(Obama) or part of the existing problem (McCain).I'll be voting for Bob Barr with a clear conscience this year

Obama- NRA Life Member

Obama Supports the Second Amendment

A fellow MyLotter was skeptical about Obama's true motives relating to gun ownership (for some inexplicable reason!) My reply:

This is complete crap! There were two comparative clips on TV last night of Obama's opinions early in the campaign season and his recent comments feigning support of the second amendment. As is quickly becoming common place,he contradicted himself. He knew full well what the Supreme Court decision was going to be,so he took the opportunity to mislead the unsuspecting moderates.Fact: Obama knows the power of the "gun lobby" from the most recent elections and is simply trying to muddy the water long enough to get elected.Fact: He IS the most liberal of them all and there are no far-left liberals in he NRA.
This guy is a better dressed, more charismatic, photogenic version of Al Gore. Under that nice paint job lies (pun intended) the typical libreral agenda. It will be interesting to see how his "core" values change as the election approaches. The uninformed,sound-bite based electorate is going to elect this man president without knowing or caring what he is really talking about. When the true far-left Obama is unveiled in November and the remainder of the inept and clueless Republicans are vanquished, we can expect a quick legislative remedy to cure and modernize not only the second amendment-but the entire pesky (to the liberal-socialists) constitution.

Please enjoy the last few months of America as we know it.Crying
